Dojo Today: Adult Program
Our Mission
Create an enjoyable and intense learning environment where students learn the traditional and practical application of martial arts.
Who We are
The Dojo has two primary instructors; Sensei vanderVeen and Sensei Sailors. Sensei vanderVeen and Sensei Saylors have been training together as best friends for 15 years.
Sensei vanderVeen's mission is to teach students traditional Martial Arts; encompassing the ancient philosophies, techniques, and trditions of Kempo karate. Students will learn traditional Katas, self-defense sequences, angles of attacks, aspects of the animals, and the customary respect and discipline exhibited in Martial Arts.
Sensei Saylor's mission is to instruct students in the practical aspect of full-contact fighting with techniques from boxing and kickboxing. Students will learn true kickboxing and boxing techniques; emphasizing speed, power, stability, and stamina. Practical science is used to explain transferring kinetic energy during strikes and the physiology of body mechanics and function that are required to increase student's cardiovascular capacity.
Our Motivation
Martial arts originated in India or China in the form of calisthenics and a weaponless fighting system. Unfortunately, in some instances, Martial Arts have evolved into a lucrative business that produces hundreeds of black belts each month. There seems to be a trend in the Martial Arts business to retain clientele by merely promoting students through ranks at a steady rate, regardless of the student's retention or ability. One of the great tragedies of modern martial arts is when students achieve a black belt and never understand the difference between traditional forms and effective fighting techniques. The founders of the Dojo have a common Goal; to help students achieve true success in martial arts.
What to Expect
Not all students are accepted to the Dojo. Only humble individuals with a desire to learn and improve physically and mentally will be considered. We welcome anyone of any age and physical condition with the right attitude to join our family.
The curriculum at the Dojo is very intense with a great deal of knowledge to absorb. This program is not for students who merely want to wear a black belt, but rather for students who wish to earn a black belt. Students will be trained in the traditional aspects of Kempo Martial arts, boxing, and kickboxing.
Intensity
The intensity of the classes are varying. Sensei vanderVeen's instruction is conventional karate; emphasizing traditional discipline and respect. The traditional aura of Martial arts will be passed from him to the the students. Physically, the classes will test your form, balance, and strength.
Sensei Saylor's instruction is less formal, but very intense; with the intention to push students to their physical limites so they know what they are capable of and how to improve. Emphasis is on power, speed, and stamina. Students will learn to punch with more power, speed, and repetition than they ever thought possible. Sensei Saylors will help students become better athletes by increasing their cardiovascular capacity through training, running, and diet.
True Kickboxing
This is not cardio or karate kickboxing. It is an intense system of effective, powerful punches and kicks that teach strength and stamina. However, students are not expecteed to get hit or suffer injuries. Students learn nothing productive from getting punched or kicked hard; so, before students are put into any form of contact, their defense is perfected, making them very hard to hit. Within a short time, students will notice such an immense increase in power from body mechanics they will be required to wrap their hands, padding their knuckles from injury.
Anatomy and Physiology
In Martial arts, our body is our only physical tool. Students will learn the strengths and weaknesses of the body; from the fragility of the hands to the pathophilogy of being knocked unconscious. Stamina is limited by cardiovascular capacity and muscle type. Students will learn about cellular metabolism, muscle types, why the body gets tired, and how to improve it.
Improved Fitness
The Dojo is committed to helping its students achieve better health through physical activities and diet. Wether your goals are weight loss or increased performance, Sensei Saylors can help you by suggesting dietary methods and teaching you to increase your fitness by running or cycling using a heart monitor.
The Dojo is dedicated to improving your life and health through Martial arts; we look forward to training with you.
